Pennsylvania Dutch Folksongs Gathered & Edited by Walter E. Boyer, Albert F. Buffington, & Don Yoder

The Mahantongo Creek slaloms its way through the Mahantongo Valley of Pennsylvania from east of Pitman, past Klingerstown, to south of Dalmatia where it flows into the Susquehanna River. This valley is rich in Pennsylvania Dutch culture, famous for its painted furniture, artfully carved tombstones, scherenschnitte, taufschein, cookery, and other crafts. In the middle of the twentieth century, three of the most accomplished scholars of the Pennsylvania Dutch culture, Walter Boyer, Albert Buffington, and Don Yoder, explored the hills and dales of this valley to collect the folksongs sung at the dances, on the farms, at the fairs, and in the churches of the villages therein. What results is a masterpiece of local culture harkening to the homeland of the Rhine Valley of Germany centuries before.
